The Heart of the Forest
— A Call from the Deep Wood —
Years after the new order took hold in Adaria, an ancient evil began to stir in the depths of the Bramblefield forest — one bound to the corruption of nature itself. Monsters spawned by the deep-rooted thorns of the once-sacred druidic lands terrorized the nearby village of Bramblefield more furiously with each passing day, as though seeking to avenge some old wrong upon the locals. The royal forces, wholly consumed by war, had no manpower to spare for aid, leaving the farmers to their fate. Fortunately, the Adventurers' Guild made it possible to hire mercenaries to clear the fringes of the deep wood, to prevent — or at least delay — future raids by goblins and wild beasts.
— The Inquisition's Incursion —
The king's secret chancellery received a report of spies from Borealis who had slipped into the western part of Adaria, supposedly in search of some magical source. Three adventurers, named Ector, Einar, and Alariel, agreed to investigate, setting out to Bramblefield for information, where they found traces of these sought-after enemies of the state. Their path led on the spies' heels straight into the depths of the deep wood — deeper than anyone had ever dared to go — as they met wholly new spawn of the thorns. Caught off guard, the spies gave up to the adventurers certain information about an ancient source of power — the Heart of the Forest, now defiled and the cause of all the region's woes. Despite the source's call that beckoned to the heroes, the trio resolved not to stray beyond the aims of their main task, handing the Borealisers over to the authorities and leaving the forest.
— Bound by Fate —
The call reached its target once more. That target was the elf Alariel. The message came to her in the form of a spectral bird — an ancient herald whose appearances had long been held an omen of the higher powers' intervention. The creature showed the way deep into the forest, insisting that she alone could sway the outcome of the coming calamity. Setting out, Alariel soon met a wanderer named Firrail. Their alliance was a matter of chance, but, following the spectral guide, they continued on their way together.
— Corruption at the Source —
Deep in the wood the travelers came upon a camp of wild goblins whose behavior betrayed the influence of an alien force. In a fierce clash they managed to destroy the camp's occupants, and among the remains a crudely carved idol was found. The goblins worshipped an entity called the Heart of the Forest, yet their cult was a perverted reflection of ancient nature-worship. This fact was the first evidence that a once-sacred power had been corrupted.
— Emissaries of an Ancient Power —
The road on led the heroes to a magical being that had taken the shape of a majestic stag. In truth it was a fey — a warden of the forest, wearing a form that could safely lead mortals through the tainted lands. It escorted them to a hidden refuge, home to the nymph Faelia — spirit of the source and one of the last keepers of the forest's untouched reaches. It was she who revealed the truth: the Heart of the Forest had not been a monster from the start. Once it had been a high druidess of the Circle of Wardens, whose corruption came of a failed ritual that had drawn an alien, dark essence into her.
— The Key to Cleansing —
Faelia explained that the Heart could not be approached — the wall of thorns that had risen around it rejected all but those who bore a like mark of darkness. For this reason Alariel was the one chosen: in her the Heart sensed something kindred, which allowed the barrier to be crossed. Yet the cleansing required an ancient ritual. Its foundation was to be a special brew made from the water of the living source — the last undefiled tree. The nymph could not leave her sanctuary, but her brother, the stag-spirit, became the heroes' guide.
— The Trial of the Tree —
The way to the source ran through lands where death already reigned. Undead roamed among the trees, but the travelers chose caution, avoiding direct confrontation. Reaching the ancient tree — the guardian of the source — they faced a final trial. The being that had guarded the water of life for ages refused to give it up without proof of worth. Only by solving the riddles the tree set before them could the heroes earn its trust. Alariel was permitted to draw the water. In that moment visions of other worlds came to her — likely the planes where the very nature of this tree had first arisen. Its duty fulfilled, the guardian of the source faded away.
— The Price of the Ritual —
Returning to Faelia, the heroes learned the true price of the cleansing. The ritual demanded not only the brew and its precise performance, but a sacrifice — the soul of the fey herself. Only her essence could become the conduit that would cleanse the Heart of its corruption. Shade's attempt to offer their own soul was refused: the ritual required a natural essence, bound to the forest itself.
Before the final step, Faelia handed the heroes gifts:
to Alariel — a whistle binding her to the stag-spirit
to Shade — artifacts whose purpose had yet to be revealed
— The Cleansing of the Heart —
Reaching the wall of thorns, the heroes faced the last obstacle. Thorns that poisoned the body, and twisted beasts guarding the heart, made the path deadly. An added threat was the influence of the Heart itself — a pressure upon the mind, able to subdue or warp anyone who dared draw near. Even so, they managed to pass through.
At the very source of the corruption, a plan laid in advance was set in motion. Alariel, able to approach without immediate rejection, made contact with the Heart, drawing its attention. Meanwhile Firrail and Faelia quietly took their positions. At the decisive moment the brew was applied, and the nymph began the ritual. Despite the risk of being subdued, Alariel withstood the Heart's influence. The ritual ended in sacrifice: Faelia's soul was destroyed and scattered. The greater part of it cleansed the Heart, undoing the corruption; another spread through the forest, driving out the taint. A small fragment was sealed within an artifact known as the Tear of Winter.
— The Birth of a New Warden —
The cleansing did not merely destroy the evil — it gave rise to something new. The Heart of the Forest, freed of corruption, became the seed for the birth of a new being — an ancient warden whose true nature remains hidden from the world for now. Once the ritual was complete, the forest sank into an unaccustomed calm. A great many of the corruption's spawn vanished, and those that remained had lost their former strength.
The stag-spirit found the heroes and led them out to Bramblefield, where they were met with gratitude.
